English Coures
University Core English Courses 校核心英語課程
Overview
- The University Core English curriculum includes both required English courses and English electives.
- Level-based instruction: Courses are offered at Levels 1, 2, and 3 to help students progressively strengthen their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- A wide range of electives: Students may choose courses in culture, literature, technology, workplace communication, and other professional fields based on their proficiency, interests, and learning goals.
Course Transition Beginning in Academic Year 115
Beginning in Academic Year 115 (2026–27), the two-credit required course Online English Learning will be replaced by AI- and Technology-Assisted English Learning.
- Course equivalency: Online English Learning completed in or before Academic Year 114 is recognized as equivalent to AI- and Technology-Assisted English Learning.
- Avoid duplicate enrollment: If you have already completed Online English Learning, do not take AI- and Technology-Assisted English Learning at the same level. The course registration system will not automatically block duplicate enrollment, but the two courses will be treated as equivalent during the final academic review. Please check your academic record carefully before registering.
Required English Courses
1 Course Requirements
Domestic students enrolled in regular bachelor's degree programs or international bachelor's degree programs must complete six credits of required English courses.
- Students in the Department of English must complete Oral-Aural Training (I) and Oral-Aural Training (II).
- Students in all other departments must complete three two-credit courses at their assigned English level or a higher level: AI- and Technology-Assisted English Learning, English Reading and Writing, and English Communication.
- Current course offerings are available through the NDHU Course Search System.
- For students with disabilities, the Counseling Center and the Language Center will work together to arrange suitable English courses based on individual learning needs.
2 English Placement
- Students are placed in Level 1, 2, or 3 based on their English score on the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT), with Level 1 serving as the foundational level and Level 3 as the most advanced.
- Placement results and important dates for first-year students are announced under “Latest News” on the Language Center website.
3 Course Registration
- Register through the NDHU Course Registration System.
- Required English courses offered in the fall semester are limited to 30 students per class. Fifteen places are released to continuing students during preliminary registration at the end of the preceding semester; the remaining fifteen are released during first-year registration in the fall.
4 Course Waivers for Required English Courses
Under a resolution adopted at the first Academic Affairs Meeting of the second semester of Academic Year 114, NDHU's Regulations Governing Exemptions from Foundational Courses will be discontinued beginning in Academic Year 115. Students admitted in Academic Year 115 or later are not eligible under the former regulations.
The former regulations allowed eligible students with approved test scores or certificates to receive course credits without taking the corresponding foundational courses. Under the Ministry of Education's definition, however, a course waiver exempts a student from taking a particular course but does not reduce the total number of credits required for graduation. Students must complete other courses to make up those credits. NDHU therefore discontinued the former regulations beginning in Academic Year 115.
Transitional arrangement: To protect the rights of students admitted in or before Academic Year 114, the University will offer one final application period in the first semester of Academic Year 115 for waivers that include the direct granting of credits. Beginning in the second semester of Academic Year 115, approved applicants may be excused from the specified course, but must complete other coursework to make up the required graduation credits.
For details, please refer to the official announcement from the Office of Academic Affairs: Discontinuation of the Regulations Governing Exemptions from Foundational Courses Beginning in Academic Year 115.
5 Credit Transfer for Transfer Students
- Transfer students who do not have a GSAT score or a score from the former Advanced Subjects Test must take the English placement test administered by the Language Center before applying for credit transfer or registering for English courses.
- For application procedures and deadlines, please visit the General Education Center website.
English Electives
Each semester, the Language Center offers a variety of electives in culture, literature, science and technology, workplace communication, translation, and other professional fields. Examples include Language and Culture in English Movies, Selected Readings in English Masterpieces, English for Science and Technology, Workplace English, and Translation 101. Students can select courses that match their proficiency, interests, and learning goals while developing practical English skills.
