中心沿革
本中心成立於民國91年8月（2002年8月），初隸屬人文社會科學學院，主要協助英美語文學系推動語言訓練課程，並提供本校師生語言教學與學習相關服務，逐步建立連結學生、教師及社區的語言學習平台。
民國94年8月（2005年8月），本中心擴大編制，改隸共同教育委員會（111學年度更名為洄瀾學院），並開始自行聘任教師，轉型為服務全校的教學與行政單位。除開設校核心英語課程及多元英語選修課程外，亦辦理英語能力檢測、語言學習活動、講座及工作坊，協助不同背景與程度的學生提升英語能力。
自民國100年8月（2011年8月）起，配合本校國際化發展及國際學生學習需求，本中心開始開設華語通識課程。華語文中心於2013年8月成立後，華語通識課程及華語教學相關業務移交該中心辦理。
發展重點
本中心以提升學生英語溝通能力、學術學習能力及跨文化素養為核心，持續精進校核心英語課程及分級教學制度。課程涵蓋英語溝通、英文閱讀與寫作，以及AI與科技輔助英語學習，並依學生程度、學習需求及未來發展提供多元選修課程。
因應教育部推動大專校院學生雙語化學習之政策方向，以及全英語授課（EMI）與專業英語學習需求，本中心持續發展學術英語（EAP）、專業英語（ESP）及職場英語相關課程，並結合數位工具與線上資源，培養學生自主學習及實際運用英語的能力。
本中心亦透過校園英語能力檢測、英語能力畢業標準相關服務、英文寫作諮詢、語言學習活動、講座及工作坊，提供學生多元的課內外學習機會，營造友善且具國際化特色的校園語言學習環境。
中心特色
本中心由專任、專案及兼任中外籍師資組成，開設不同級數及領域的英語課程。除校核心英語必修課程外，選修課程涵蓋文化、文學、科技、職場、翻譯、簡報、導覽、會展及跨領域應用等主題，使學生能依個人程度、興趣及學習目標選擇適合的課程。
為支持學生自主學習，本中心提供Clarity English、Easytest及空中英語教室等線上學習資源，並將AI與數位科技融入課程設計，協助學生強化英語聽、說、讀、寫及實際應用能力。
此外，本中心依年度規劃辦理英語學習活動、英文寫作諮詢及校園英語能力檢測，並提供英文編修與翻譯服務，支援本校教學、研究、國際交流及行政業務，提升本校整體英語學習環境與國際溝通能力。
Center Development
The Language Center was established in August 2002 under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It initially supported language training courses offered by the Department of English and provided language teaching and learning services to the university community. Over time, the Center developed into a language learning platform connecting students, faculty, and the wider community.
In August 2005, the Center expanded and was reorganized under the Committee for General Education, which was renamed the College of Huilan in the 2022–2023 academic year. The Center began recruiting its own faculty and became a university-wide teaching and administrative unit. In addition to offering Core English and a broad range of elective courses, it organizes English proficiency testing, language learning activities, lectures, and workshops for students with diverse backgrounds and proficiency levels.
Beginning in August 2011, the Center offered Mandarin Chinese general education courses in response to the university’s internationalization efforts and the learning needs of international students. When the Chinese Language Center was established in August 2013, responsibility for Mandarin Chinese general education courses and related teaching services was transferred to the new center.
Key Development Areas
The Center continually enhances its Core English curriculum and level-based instruction to strengthen students’ communication skills, academic literacy, and intercultural competence. Core courses include English Communication, English Reading and Writing, and AI- and Technology-Assisted English Learning, complemented by electives designed for different proficiency levels, learning needs, and future goals.
In response to the Ministry of Education’s policy direction for bilingual learning in higher education, as well as the growing demand for English-medium instruction (EMI) and professional English learning, the Center continues to develop courses in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and workplace English. Digital tools and online resources are integrated into teaching to strengthen students’ independent learning and practical use of English.
The Center provides a wide range of curricular and extracurricular learning opportunities through campus English proficiency testing, services related to the English proficiency requirements for graduation, writing consultations, language learning activities, lectures, and workshops. These initiatives help create an inclusive and internationally oriented language learning environment on campus.
Key Features
The Center’s local and international teaching team includes full-time, contract, and part-time faculty. In addition to required Core English courses, the Center offers electives in culture, literature, science and technology, workplace communication, translation, presentations, guided tours, meetings and exhibitions, and interdisciplinary applications. Students can select courses that match their proficiency, interests, and learning goals.
To support self-directed learning, the Center provides online resources such as Clarity English, Easytest, and Studio Classroom. AI and digital technologies are also incorporated into course design to strengthen students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing, and practical communication skills.
The Center also organizes English learning activities, writing consultations, and campus English proficiency testing according to its annual program. Its English editing and translation services support teaching, research, international exchange, and administrative work across the university, contributing to a stronger English learning environment and greater capacity for international communication.
