History & Development

Center Overview

The language center was established in August 2002 under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, primarily to support the language training programs of the Department of English. Its mission is to assist faculty with teaching and academic needs related to language learning, provide services, and establish a platform that connects students, faculty, and the community for language education. The center aims to contribute to creating a modern language learning environment at the university.

In August 2005, the center expanded its structure and was reorganized under the Committee for General Education (Renamed College of Huilan in the 2022-2023 academic year), beginning to recruit its teaching staff. This transition elevated the center’s role to that of a university-wide administrative and teaching unit. In addition to supporting general education language courses, the center hosts a variety of extracurricular English activities designed to motivate students to actively participate in learning English. It also organizes English proficiency workshops, campus-wide English competency tests, and tailored learning strategies for students with diverse backgrounds and skill levels, making language learning more effective and meaningful.

Since August 2011, the center has offered Chinese language general education courses in alignment with the university’s efforts to attract international students. In August 2013, the Chinese Language Center was established, and responsibilities for Chinese general education courses and Mandarin teaching were transferred to the new center.

Key Development Focus

The center prioritizes advancing general education English through innovative curriculum design and upgraded teaching facilities. Over the next three years, the center's key development goals include:

  1. Establishing an English Writing Consultation Center.
  2. Organizing diverse language-learning competitions, lecture series, and workshops.
  3. Supporting students in publishing an online English campus newsletter.

The English Writing Consultation Center will leverage the expertise of the center’s full-time faculty and top students from the Department of English and American Literature to provide personalized English writing consultations for undergraduate and international students.

To expand the university’s impact on the community, the center will organize creative and diverse summer camps during the summer break. These camps will take advantage of the university’s unique campus environment and benefit Indigenous children, underprivileged secondary school students in Hualien and Taitung, as well as English-proficient students nationwide.

Center Features

With nearly 20 full-time local and international faculty members, the center offers various elective courses integrating culture, literature, and professional fields. These include Language and Culture in English Movies, Selected Reading in English Masterpieces, English for Science and Technology, Workplace English, Translation, and more.
